So I went to the building store all ready to get the wood I needed to build a 8ft high by 5ft wide bookshelf. I looked at the different wood available thinking that a hard wood would hold the weight of heavy books better. But the end price was going to be over $100. Yikes! Just for a book shelf made from solid wood! Any ideas for a sturdy, inexpensive, book shelf around those measurments?

Re: Bookshelf building
Fri, February 18, 2005 - 2:58 PMI haven't priced them lately, but maybe you could get the shelf parts already made, and "just" make the box part.. out of a nice veneered plywood, and get the iron-on veneer strips for the outer edges.
My experience in the past with that veneer stripping though, is that you will want to go ahead & glue it as well. the glue doesn't always stick, and use an older iron that you know is completely dry.
You could also make the shelves with thinner wood, put cross supports underneath, and then a lip so the supports aren't visible.
Or make the whole thing out of MDF.. heavy stuff.. but may be less expensive. You could then use moulding/trim to give it a less contemporary look, then paint it.
I remember having similar sticker shock when I had this great idea to make my own Mission-style sofa.. it's a bummer when you want to be both handy & thrifty.
OH...here's an idea... see if your area has a reuse or salvage store... maybe they would have some old doors or panels you could use.. or sometimes the one here even has used office furniture that doesn't look half bad. :)
Good luck, and keep us posted on how your project is going. -

Fri, February 18, 2005 - 2:59 PMoh.. one more thing.. the standard is if your shelves are going to span more than 30", you shoudl have some sort of center support to prevent sagging/breaking of the shelves...

Re: Bookshelf building
Tue, February 22, 2005 - 12:20 PMThank you for your advice. We did look at the ready made particle boards but asceticly didn't like them and had doubts about their sturdyness even with a middle support. And they were not cheaper enough to make a big difference from the poplar or pine boards. And the bf really didn't like the iron on veneer either. I guess we had in mind making a really nice bookshelf and if we made it ourselves it would be really inexpensive. Like making your own dinners compared to eating out. I learned my lesson. I'll just keep my eyes out at garage sales and further check out the MDF you recommended. I'd never heard of it before and it sounds interesting. Thanks again Adele!
