What was your first handygrrl project?

This is such an awesome tribe -- thanks Adele for starting this up!

I am trying to figure out what it was that crystalized the handygirlieness in all of us. I think one of the earliest memories I can think of is wanting to put together my Barbie cottage. I couldn't wait for my dad to do it, so I read the instructions and did it myself. After that (and other incidents) I became the handy man of the house.

I grew up on a *farm* so I have been fixing things since I was about 8 or 9.
We were poor too, so I had to fix a lot of my toys at some point or another.
My first really big project was rebuilding my 1970 Chevy pick-up.

      Welcome, Aarati!

My earliest handy grrl memory is going to the hardware store with my dad... It was a great store.. old creaky wood floors, bins and bins of screws & bolts... just at the right height for a toddler to dig in! You can bet that was my last trip to the hardward store for awhile.

The first actual project I can think of was also Barbie related. I built a throne for her from wood & felt.. gee.. I might still even have it!

I tried to build her an A-frame house with a treebark roof, but Barbie couldn't stand up straight or lay down, so I turned it into the manger for a nativity scene. Handy Grrl motto: "If it doesn't turn out, turn it into something else."

I also took apart & reassembled my bicycle every year starting at age 10... nothing like rebuilding your truck, though Heidi.. wow! One thing I am definately not is vehicle handy.... yet :)

First project was probably my first car a 1980 Datsun B210 with constant problems in one part or another. I learned how to replace alternators, belts, break pads, carborators, etc until is died of a thrown rod on the way back from Oregon.
