Thus far I had been trying to stick with stuff that wouldn't "harden" or make the rubber less "rubbery" but I'm at the end of my rope with this. It stays up for a while but the heat gets to the glue and it all falls down again. Ugh. So far what has worked has been a combination of the rubber cement type stuff that my mechanic gave me (kind of made the rubber tacky) and the silicone based glue. So far (knock on wood) it's holding up okay... Not great (it's lumpy and coming apart in the corners from the tension of the rubber) but at least it's not down. I think the heat in the car in summertime is what kills the glue. I was driving down the road the other day, saw someone driving the exact same car that I have and she had used ribbon to tie the &^*^ rubber stripping back on. Apparently it's a "known issue". Moral of the story? Don't buy a VW. It's called Industrial Strength E6000, comes in a gray tube (or convenient caulking gun size), is onlny $4.75 and had effectively glued just about everything I've ever set it to. (ceramics, rubber, leather, vinyl, wood, in random combinations to each other too...) The project for the past few days has been to glue the *&^%* fabric/rubber trim back onto the area around the door of my car. I tried what my mechanic suggested, a glue made specifically for rubber and that didn't even last an hour. This stuff was holding on the last time I looked... Well, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it will last through the torture test of hot car in summer time. Anyone else have experience with trying to glue rubber to rubber? Did you find something that stayed flexible and worked?
