I just changed my first tire today... That's right, my first tire. I got a flat this morning and decided I needed to know how to do it, grabbed the owner's manual, and taught myself... It was beautiful... I feel like a real woman now.
Do you all remember your first tire change?

Fri, June 17, 2005 - 5:31 PMI never had to change one but I do know how to do it because a few years ago my boss had a daughter leaving for college and when he taught her how to change a tire he decided to teach all the women who worked for him at the same time. It does make you feel more confident knowing you can do it! -

Fri, June 17, 2005 - 7:32 PMRock on, peaches!!! It's a great feeling, accomplishing something like that for the first time...
I haven't had to change a tire.... yet *crosses fingers and spits*
Judi.. I think that's great that the guy you worked for did that.. wonder if there were a few guys that could have benefited from the lesson too...... -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 10:05 PMRock on for the handy women that we are!!
I felt really accomplished when a bad situation forced me to change my oil on the side of a highway. I had to call a guy friend of mine to get me a bucket but that's all that he was able to help me with. Changing my own oil progressed to many other necessary vehicle fixes that my ford (found on road dead) and pocket book forced me to figure out. I plan on (one day) buying another old beater vehicle and teaching my boyfriend how to work on cars. I always feel really accomplished when I can do something for myself that other people pay money for. -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 10:29 PMIf you can read you can fix a car or anything else for that matter. I'm all about those how-to manuals. -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 10:31 PMI'm an anti-manual kinda gal.. yes.. I know they're useful.. I'm just more of a "show me & walk me through it" person.. -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Sat, June 18, 2005 - 6:22 AMCongrats. on your 1st tire change!!!!:)
My dad supervised my first tire change on a full sized Ford truck (when I was 14). No hydraulic jack back then, we had a Handyman jack and I could barely lift it. The lug nuts were on so tight that I had to jump on the tire iron to break them loose. It probably took an hour to change that one tire, but I felt real smart when I was done.
It's been years since I've had to change a tire, but I still can.....if I have to! -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Sat, June 18, 2005 - 9:46 AMYeah I had to jump on the wrench, too... Man were those lugnuts on tight! But it felt so good once I got it all finished... It took me an hour and a half to change it but that's cause all the lugnuts were taking forever to budge and I had to make a few phone calls for work in the middle of it... But DAMN! There is no better feeling than when you surprise yourself. It makes me feel so independent, so strong to know that in an "emergency" situation (even though this time it wasn't really an emergency) I can take care of myself, that even if I don't know how to do something, I'm smart enough to figure it out, ON MY OWN... It's funny how little events in your life can mean and teach you so much... -

Sat, June 18, 2005 - 4:26 PMand what's even better.. it spills over into the rest of your life :)) -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Mon, June 20, 2005 - 6:04 AMAnd even better than that is the fact that we (females) CAN do a heck of a lot more than we've been lead to beleive we can. Where there's a will there's a way and brawn doesn't always win over brains!!!!! ;o) -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Mon, June 20, 2005 - 10:10 AMYes and we do it with smaller tools! I have been laughed at by men---hey you need a bigger shovel --- or whatever but I get the last laugh when I get the job done! -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 7:12 PMTrue enough, but a sense of accomplishment in doing a task you didn't think you could, or have been told you couldn't knows no gender boundaries .. . like when my brother sewed his first shirt.
Handy is as handy does :) -

Too true!
But my 19 yr. old son still doesn't seem too proud if I make him do what he considers "girl work" ;) -

Re: Woo Hoo!
Fri, June 24, 2005 - 10:58 AMInteresting thought, women have learned to handle the traditionally men's jobs and we can still be feminine and dress up and wear heels etc but many men still have a problem doing women's work, they fear they will lose their masculinity. I wonder why it is harder for men to change? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Woo Hoo!
Fri, June 24, 2005 - 8:26 PMI've known plenty of women who've grumbled about having to do "man's work" as well....
Let's try to stay focused on the pride we take in being handy & self reliant, rather than what people of a species may or may not accept/tolerate.. that would be a different tribe entirely :). -
