As a costumer and a handy grrl I have figured out that both fashion and household items mix well. Here are some of the things I have discovered:
*if you want that cute hoop/alien look to the hems of you skirts, collars, or pant legs use 1/8" flexable clear tubing that you can get in the plumbig section of your hardware store (usually with the garbage disposals) Run some of this tubing inside your of your hem and attach with a little connector bit (technical term)
*sylicone sealant that you would use to seal your tubs or sinks is awesome for gluing little artistic touches onto bicycles, cars, mail boxes, or where ever you want to add something fun. I have used it to glue lizards onto my bicycle, cover another bike in purple leopard fur, and decorated our plain old boring mailbox.
What have you found??

Re: Hardware store fashions
Tue, October 12, 2004 - 5:18 PM12 gauge stranded copper wire!! Made great "bones" for my faerie wings (the look on the guy's face when I asked if it cme in pink...priceless!!)... and for armatures for some of my beaded jewelry & sculptures.
Drywall plaster to make shoe/boot lasts.
The ever popular duct tape... www.ducktapeclub.com
Not from the hardware store, but when I worked for the phone company, got lots of leftover wire from the repair guys/girls... once you strip off the ugly duckling grey sheathing.. a rainbow of colors for all sorts of things!
yup.. silicone sealant.. using it on my oh so slowly evolving mosaic in the bathroom (I think there's a pic in my profile).
Great post, Jezebel.. thanks :) -

Re: Hardware store fashions
Thu, October 14, 2004 - 7:12 PMsure.. it's made from fish tank pebbles.. lots & lots of tiny fish tank pebbles.. stuck on with silicone glue. The one thing I've learned in this project is gravity sucks! If I were to do it again, I would do panels on a substrate, then stick the panels on.
That whole bathroom has been a learning thing for me. My friend Carolyn & I put up a steel ceiling a couple summers ago. Good thing we think alike.. two step ladders in a tiny bathroom makes for close quarters! I did all the preframing myself, though.. yaya!! -

Thu, October 14, 2004 - 7:13 PMI saw somewhere where a person had used metal washers to decorate their skirt & jacket.. looked very cool! I now look at hardware items as possible fashion accessories, for sure!
