I came to Handy Grrls because even though I know lots of females, none of them are "handy". They all look at me like I was from another planet. They have trouble understanding that I don't HAVE to do the "handy" stuff I do, but that I ENJOY doing the "handy" stuff. And I like to shop, just like any other female, but I like to shop for power tools, tools, etc. Lowe's and Home Depot are my favorite stores. ;)
I consider myself a "handy girl", so this tribe was perfect.

There just is something about the smell of a hardware store that's inspiring, isn't there?

I created Handy Grrls partially with just what you said in mind, Lisa... also... so there could be an exchange of tips & questions freely, without a "oh how dumb" roll of the eyes.....

I love the power tools section. I was picking up circular saws and the guys were looking at me like, "wha??!!!" hehehehe.

I have a 36 year old home. I could not even hold a hammer when I first bought it. I can now do cedar siding, dry wall, deck repair, build stairs, paint, landscape, minor plumbing and electrical, the list just keeps on going. I am very proud of my tools I have collected over the years. I joined to find women like me

Yay, dina! It really feels good to be self-reliant in home maintenance..a lot of the things needed to be done aren't nearly as difficult as we are led to believe..

So true. I pulled off the trim around the top of my stair well because i want to seal off the top floor from the bottom making two seperate suites. Funny thing is there is a bit of a space in the dry wall behind where the trim was. I am concerned with sound transmission. I have some vague recolection of a spray in foam as a sealer I saw used on a boat once. Anyone know what it is called? Thought if I shot that in the gaps before closing off the stairwell it might help with the sound transmission.

Spray foam insulation? heh.. I don't think the coffee's hit my brain yet.. mebbe someone else will know better than I do. I've seen it in small cans, for spaces around windows & doors.. it expands... FAST... and BIG !!

Check out your locat DIY big store.. they likely will have it.

thank you. I have fri, sat, sun to close off the stairs, and paint 5 rooms and hallway. About 2500 square feet. Then I get to replace the stairs going up to the pool deck. It enver ends.

I came to this tribe because I want to be handy, but am intimidated. I guess I'm afraid I'll make things worse. When I ask someone to show me how to do something, they just do it for me, don't want to teach me. What's that about? I wish I could be a handy girl apprentice, develop some confidence. I guess I was hoping it would rub off.

Lori....don't be afraid to make mistakes, we all do.
Everyone make mistakes or handy jobs don't go like you planned, but that's how we learn and it can all be fixed.
Being "handy", now days, is easier than ever before because there is so much info for projects out there now.
As Adele said, start with small things. Once you accomplish those, you'll be hooked and bigger stuff will come......but don't be afraid.

I'm still a bit intimidated by power tools with sharp bits.. but it's just a matter of jumping in & making friends with them :)

What brought me to handy grrls is hoping to get some tips and tricks for stuff like woodworking. My house was built in 1913. Lotsa trim. And I do have a question which I've really not been comfortable asking elsewhere. What exactly is a 'mouse sander' and how do I use it?

hmmm.. I would have to go to a home improvement store & look at one.. sounds like it might be small & shaped a bit like a computer mouse & made to get in to smaller places, like corners.. anyone else know for sure?

I had a house about your age.. yup.. lotsa trim.. especially when yer thinking about stirpping it all if it's been painted... quite the archeological project! My one thought is to be sure to check out what lead abatement codes are in your city, there's likely lead paint in some of those layers.. wear gloves/goggles & a maske when stripping the trim to help keep you from ingesting too much of it!

A "mouse" sander is a small, kind of triangle shaped sander that's made especially to get into tight places (corners, etc.) The "mouse" sanders save a lot of time and effort when it comes to sanding smal, tight places.
A "must have" if you're doing a lot of wood work.
