So.. here I am taking a break from my weekend project.. doing a plaster finish on my dining room walls.
Let me tell ya, it pays to use the right stuff! I started out using a 20 minute set-time drywall mud & the danged stuff started to set in my bucket after 10 minutes.. grrr!! Now I have some 45 minute stuff.. and it's going so much better.. yay!!!!
And now I have the mixture down too.. water first, drywall stuff 2nd.. and buttercream frosting consistency.. NOT cake batter..
So. There it is.. my DIY plastering workshop.. student of one! :)

Re: Mistress of Mud
Mon, June 13, 2005 - 4:53 AMGood job, Adele.
This spring I took on a drywall "re-do" in our entry way.
Prior owners had done the worst job you could imagine, they hadn't even taped any of the joints. I think it would have been a lot easier to have taken it all down and started fresh.
I was my first big drywall job and i'm not real anxious to doing any more for awhile. (It did turn out nice though):) -

Mon, June 13, 2005 - 5:32 AMMy bag off to you, Lisa! :) getting those joints all lovely & invisibie is really hard, in my mind! Thankfully, what I did was the rough looking kinda Tuscan look that is popular right now.. I'm hoping it's dry enough to paint tonight ;) -

Mon, June 13, 2005 - 5:57 AMThanx, Adele.
My bag off to you for taking on the texture job!:)
I wanted to do a "venetion plaster" texture, but after all the trouble I had just getting the dry wall to look decent, I was just sick of dealing with it.
I went to Lowe's and bought some textured paint (has sand in it), put it on and dragged a stiff bristled brush thru it. I was easy and quick, I'm really happy with the results. It looks like I went to a lot more effort than I did.
One of these days I'm going to have the time and get as brave as you did!!!:o) Oh....are you doing a 2 part paint or just one color? -

Mon, June 13, 2005 - 6:01 AMI'm not sure yet if I'm doing a colour wash over the basecoat or not... I'm getting my house ready to sell.. so I need to think about that some more.. I do love the colour wash for the depth it gives.
yeah.. Venitian plaster can be a pain.. especially the polishing step.. geesh!
Love the idea of your dragging a brush through the wet mud.. nice! :)

Tue, June 14, 2005 - 5:04 AMThat's why I chickened out on the vevetian plaster....sounded too complex for my simple mind!:)
So, what about the "tuscan look" you did? Major diff between it and venetian plaster?
Sounds like we're kind of in the same boat, housewise. You're doing a lot of stuff to sell yours and I've got the total fixer-upper. Mine is a real pain though because I have to fix every thing prior owners did before wall treatments, tile, ect. Some of the stuff is so messed up that it will have to wait until I have a lot more time and a lot more cash! -
