Re: Welcome, new members!
Sat, March 12, 2005 - 8:27 AMThanks for the welcome.
My boyfriend actually jokes that whenever I'm doing stuff in the house, I have adult ADD- I will have about 6 home projects going on at once. Right now, I'm in the middle of stripping 65 years worth of paint and varnish off my kitchen cabinets, building a bookshelf for under a low window, and painting the living room.
Here's a question for any of you that do paint stripping. . .
I have a 30's style apartment- lots of molding and carved wood. What is you all's favorite tools for getting sanding and stripping done in archs and corners?

Sat, March 12, 2005 - 11:49 AMhmmm.. I haven't stripped super-detailed moulding.. I've used safe stripper gel & toothpick to get the gunk out of my Victorian moulding.. that worked pretty well.
I know there are people here who have more experience with painting.. maybe they have some ideas? -

Re: Welcome, new members!
Mon, March 21, 2005 - 9:53 PMi'm just starting to get some projects going. I moved to sf a year and a half ago and haven't been doing much more than knitting here. i have a few ideas for projects that are in the works. First I'm going to get my roomate's sewing machine working. Also I have an outlandish project in mind that includes a pogo stick and some welding. first I need to learn to weld. I'm refinishing my dresser and a blanket chest as well.
In general i'm a dabbler - I have dabbled in making jewelry (mostly silver, some copper, no gold), furniture making (tables, chests, and little things), pottery for a couple years, general fix-it up projects, sewing clothes etc, and lots of crafty things like candles, paper, knitting, and what not. -

Re: Welcome, new members!
Mon, March 21, 2005 - 10:05 PMI seem to have Meredith's problem, all kinds of crafty projects but all seemingly half finished. If I pick up one more craft project my boyfriend will officially disown me. My latest "handy" project is changing the rear brake pads on my little VW.
What makes me a Handy Grrl? Pottery, a little woodworking, basic maintenance on a car, knitting (badly), sewing and a love of power tools.

Re: Welcome, new members!
Tue, March 22, 2005 - 5:34 PMHowdy ho! Just like everyone here, I also have an overflowing plate of projects I'm working on. Most recent projects: tiling my kitchen countertop in our first bus conversion, in the middle of tiling the shower area, just finished stripping 9 layers of aircraft style paint off of a Greyhound bus which turned into a two year project, lots of bodywork which includes sandblasting/priming/bondo/de-rusting..I'll be finished with the priming in two days (my fingers are crossed and... bruised)...haven't had time to do anything 'fun' for a couple of years. I have a question for all you handy grrls. Sometime in the distant future I am planning on doing mosaic tile...on the ceiling in the inside the Greyhound bus just above the driver's area as you walk into the door. My concern is that once it's all up I might have problems with tiles coming loose and falling down due to the vibration of the bus...any ideas on how to achive this task and not have falling tiles? The ONLY reason I am choosing to do this is because that area is curved and needs something (anything but fabric/headliner....no cloth)...so that's all I could come up with that would look 'nice'. Or, any other ideas that might work?? I would REALLY appreciate any ideas! Thank you in advance. -

mosaic on a ceiling
Fri, March 25, 2005 - 7:23 PMSounds a little dangerous to me, little possibly sharp bits of stuff falling down... Were you planning to use grout? That can also lead to little bits falling down, I think, and could be rather heavy.
Have you considered something lighter like paper? I know you said no cloth, but I'm trying to think of things that won't hurt if it falls down on someone's head. Or maybe CD's in a mosaic instead of tile/glass or small strips of thin wood?

Re: mosaic on a ceiling
Fri, March 25, 2005 - 8:03 PMyou know.. I was thinking along the lines of strips of wood, too.. like in a boat or vardo. no idea how to do it though.
Zeelala... (sorry if I misspelled your name).. how about posting your question as a separate post? Maybe you'll get some good ideas. -

Re: mosaic on a ceiling
Sat, March 26, 2005 - 4:51 PMI don't know how to do it with real wood, or at least without proffessional woodworking stuff. . .
But if you wanted to invest is balsa (sp?) wood, you can curve balsa wood after soaking it in water for a day or so. You could buy long strips, and soak them shape and glue them to the roof. It would let you then (after the glue and wood dries) to stain them like regular wood, giving you lots of options for color and style.

Re: Welcome, new members!
Sun, March 27, 2005 - 5:12 AMHello everyone, I'm new here. This looks like a great place for me, as I consider myself a handy girl!!! This tribe is cool because all the women I know are totally helpless and don't ever have a clue of what I'm talking about.
I always have a lot of good projects going because the house we live in is a total fixer upper. Just finished redoing a big front entryway, from replacing all the drywall to the finish texture, paint and tile. It looks great!
My husband teases me all the time because he says I almost have more tools than he does. I use them all though, they're not just for pretty.
HAPPY EASTER!
